Local Interest in Sanquhar

In operation for over 300 years, Sanquhar Post Office is the world’s oldest working post office. It has operated at its location on Sanquhar High Street since 1712 and is recognised by the Guiness Book of World Records for its record-breaking longevity. Many visitors come to have their postcards and letters stamped with “The World’s Oldest Post Office”, a novel souvenir of a visit to this area.

Another fixture on Sanquhar’s High Street, the Crown Inn is a traditional family-run pub with beer garden. Its Shanter lounge is inspired by Scots poet Robert Burns’ most famous work, Burns having been a frequent visitor to the village during the 1780s. The pub itself dates back as far as 1738.

Food is served on certain days with occasional live music and charity events.

This indoor pool features a great range of facilities and is available to both members and on a pay-as-you-go basis. There is a four-lane pool, teaching pool, gym and health suite with sauna and steam room.
