Crawick Multiverse

Visit Crawick Multiverse, a major land art project located just outside Sanquhar, only five minutes’ drive from Newark Farm.

Opened to the public in June 2015, Crawick Multiverse is a land art project by the late Charles Jencks. The artist was originally commissioned by the Duke of Buccleuch in 2005 to design an inspiring landscape on the site of a former opencast coal mine.  The project reclaims and reforms the 55-acre site to create a large-scale installation consisting of nine “landforms”. These features include man-made hills crowned with stone circles, long stone walkways lined by standing stones, ponds and open grassland.

The site draws on inspiration from the universe and modern cosmology, which is reflected in the names and shapes of the landforms. It also seems particularly apt because, as Crawick Multiverse largely uses materials found on the site, the theme reflects on the cosmic and planetary forces that created the Earth, its geology and of course the coal from which this region drew prosperity in times past.

While moderately strenuous, the walk the top of the site is particularly rewarding as it affords excellent views of the upper Nith Valley with its glorious green countryside and surrounding hills.

Engaging with the artwork is of course the principal reason to visit, but this is also simply a great location to walk around, enjoy the scenery and relax.
